Aims of the Graduate School

The graduate school started in April 1998 and now is in the second phase (April 2001 - March 2004). An important aim of the graduate school is to complete doctoral dissertations with 3 years.

The design of efficient algorithms is a central and challenginging problem in mathematics, computer science and engineering. Today many problems in real-world applications can only be solved with algorithms of nearly optimal time and space complexity. Numerical simulation replaces more and more experimental tests, for example the computation of electromagnetic fields in biological tissue or the destruction free ultrasound investigation of mechanical devices.

In cooperation of mathematicians, computer scientists and engineers we seek for the design of efficient algorihtms based on a structural understanding for interesting problems in the following research areas:

- Partial differential equations (elliptic, hyperbolic, Navier-Stokes), combinatorial optimization, geometry, computer vision and robotics
- Adaptivity in numerical analysis and robotics
- Multiscaleanalysis, image and signal processing (e.g. multidimensional wavelets, filter banks, image reconstruction)
- Macro- and Microstructures
- Non-linear control
-Parallel algorithms in numerical analysis, optimization and circuit simulation.
