Stefan A. Sauter:

Composite Finite Elements for problems with complicated boundary. Part III: Essential Boundary Conditions

In this paper, we define a new class of conforming finite elements for the approximation of functions in H01(Omega). In contrast to standard finite elements, the approximation property can be proved without any restrictions on the (minimal) dimension of these so-called composite finite element spaces also for very complicated domains. Therefore, this class of finite elements can be used for coarse-level discretizations of PDEs on complicated domains.
